About Us

Tone Deft is a women's Show Choir based in Perth, Western Australia. Formed in 2015, Tone Deft began regular rehearsals in April. With a repertoire taken from the best of pop music and musical theatre, the choir has a focus on performance techniques and creating high-quality music, while having a great time singing together.
Singing has a magical ability to bring people together. Joining together in song fosters a bond between singers, working together to create something beautiful. Whether you're a karaoke king, a shower starlet, or you haven't sung with others since primary school, a choir brings together a group of individuals to create something much greater than the sum of our parts. At the centre of Tone Deft is the belief that choirs should be inclusive, supportive and welcoming. As such, we hold no auditions to join the choir.
Show Choirs are a little different to most other choirs. We perform without sheet music to support us (although we use it to learn the pieces), many pieces in our repertoire include dance routines, and we rarely stand in neat, organised rows. If that sounds like something you'd love to be a part of, email us at tonedeftchoir@gmail.com to register your interest. Alternatively, you can find out more on our Frequently Asked Questions page.
The choir rehearses Wednesday evenings in North Perth, and is led by Amanda Johnston.
About Amanda:
My earliest memory of singing wisdom came from my Pop, who would love to tell his grandchildren that singing in church was great: you could sing as loud as you wanted, and no one would hear you. He would also love driving me around, because I insisted from a young age of singing on every car journey. My brother was once asked by a music teacher whether I sung, his smart-arse teenage response was "she never shuts up". Long story short: I've always loved to sing.

Having sung in bands at school, pantomimes at university, and show choirs as an adult; along with leading a corporate choir in London and performing at the iconic club Koko, I returned to Perth from the UK in 2014 to find the range of choirs available in Perth didn't quite fit with my ideal choir "wish list". The choir I was looking for - high energy, with a focus on performing current hits and musical theatre anthems (with a healthy smattering of pop classics), combining singing and dance routines - didn't seem to exist in Perth. After testing out a few choirs; spending nearly a year complaining to my friends that nothing was quite "right"; and avoiding the obvious (perhaps inevitable) solution, I finally came to the conclusion that there was nothing else for it: it was time to start my own choir. With that, Tone Deft was born.

I would like to express my deepest thank you to Emily Cook and Anna Shields of Starling Arts (London, UK) for their tireless support.
